Nandina orginates from China and Japan and is an unusual monotipic genus (only plant in it's genus) which is frequently referred to as a type of Bamboo. This is quite misleading as the plant has no relationship to bamboo, well except the fact they are both plants! It is a member of the same family as Berberis. Nandina domestica Woods Dwarf is very compact. It produces Pink/purple leaves in spring with the new growth, turning green as the season progresses. In autumn the foliage will turn shades of red and orange. Clusters of small, delicate, white star shaped flowers can be produced in summer which can become red berries by autumn. All in all this plant has exceptional all year round interest. They can be used in a mixed planting, as a central specimen plant or in a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality, well drained, John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. Nandina are regarded as hardy in the Uk. however if you live in our more northern climes or on the top of a mountain or similar location potentially subject to very cold weather, you should ensure the plant is in a south facing sheltered location and give it some protection in the worst of winter.
